For a while now, Ian and I have known that we wanted to surprise two of our best friends, Kyle and Jennifer, after they had their little girl, Sadie. We talked about it for months, but we just thought we'd never be able to make it happen. Well, surprise, surprise! We are making it happen!
Ian asked me early last week if there was something special we could do that would make me really happy. I thought about it for a few hours, and as we were getting ready for bed that night, I told him that it would make me really happy to just show up on Kyle and Jennifer's front porch and surprise them! So we immediately began talking out the details of the trip! He was willing to do anything to make his wifey happy. Ever since we decided to go, it's been all I can think about! I am soooo excited, and I just keep imagining the looks on their faces when we send Cayman up to knock on their front door Friday evening! The thought makes me cry! (I sure hope they live up to my expectations for this surprise!) :)
We knew there was no way we'd able to afford to fly, so once we finally decided to make the trip, we were just anticipating the 12 hour drive. We planned to drive overnight so the kids could sleep the entire way. We weren't sure if that would actually happen, but that's what our goal was! The closer and closer we got to actually driving all that way, the more and more we wished we were flying. Ian had to let the business consultant know that we were leaving to go out of town for a week, and he just happened to ask about the possibility of Chick-fil-A paying for us to fly. The business consultant said that since we were probably going to be here through the holidays, he didn't see why that would be a problem, but that Ian would need to talk to the man who's in charge of the IM program. So Ian sent him an email, and he responded almost immediately saying that he didn't think that would be a problem! So now we're FLYING tomorrow, and we feel like a huge weight has been lifted off our shoulders without that 12 hour drive looming ahead of us.
Even though we're flying, we've still met a different set of issues, specifically what we're going to do with the kids' car seats. We've decided to take Cayman's seat with us and borrow an infant seat for Charis from our other best friends, Brandon and Stacy. However, the bag that I need to check Cayman's car seat is in AUGUSTA. (Stupid me thought that since we now had our van we wouldn't need to fly anywhere - we'd just drive everywhere! So why in the world would I need the car seat cover?! And since we decided to fly only a few days ago, there wasn't enough time for my mom to mail us the bag...unless she were to overnight it and pay an arm and a leg. That wasn't an option.) So now, I've been working to find a bag to pack Cayman's car seat in. It looks like we'll be using garbage bags. Better than nothing I suppose.
The logistics of flying with an infant and toddler is a bit overwhelming for me. I'm trying to keep everything organized and think everything through so that we don't get stuck in a security line for packing something in our carry-on that we were supposed to pack in our luggage! I really don't do well flying - it stresses me out big time! Not to mention I've got to pack snacks to keep everyone happy, toys to keep Cayman happy, food for Charis now that she's eating solids, extra clothes (in case somebody gets motion sickness like their mama), etc. etc...and all while staying within TSA guidelines! Thankfully they make exceptions for baby food. And we'll be sure to leave Cayman's pretend guns and knives at home (just kidding - he has none of those!)
I look forward to posting TONS of pictures from our week coming up! As well as posts about how our journey to Raleigh (and Charlotte and back to FL) goes!
