Groceries. Ugh.

I went to the grocery store for a few things today. $100 and 1 hour later we walked out. I should have known when I went in that I was going to end up spending around that - I was down to one meal in our freezer! No meat. No frozen dinners. One meal. (That's unheard of in this household.) When I was growing up, it seemed like our pantry, fridge, and freezers were always full. Maybe I just don't remember the days leading up to the big grocery shopping trip. But with 4 kids (3 of them being boys who were constantly bringing other teenage boys over), mom generally kept everything stocked. So our cupboards are never bare now, because I guess I'm afraid we'll run out of food! I guess I got a little off track there, but what I was trying to say was I was dangerously close to running out of food (in my mind....) so I went to the grocery store to pick up a few things, but in the back of my head, I was picturing my cupboards being bare, so I got more than I planned on. There. End of story. Poor Cayman ended up having to walk the latter part of the trip because he ran out of space in the buggy! He helped me push Charis around the store. That's the first time I've ever let him roam freely in the grocery store. Hopefully I won't have to do it again for a while. He did PRETTY good. Towards the end I had to force him to help push the buggy, and then I resorted to having him carry something to the check-out lane.

This morning I woke up with a full-fledge cold. When I worked in the daycare I would get this same illness 3-4 times a year. Since I quit working with kids (other than my own) on a daily basis, I have rarely been sick. I'm guessing someone we visited had been sick, or I received some of those nasty germs in the airport/plane! The kids woke up fine this morning, but when Cayman woke up from his 3.5 hour nap with a runny nose, I realized he'd caught it too! I asked him if he was sick, and he said, "Yes ma'm. I throw up." And then proceeded to pretend to throw up. Obviously the only other time he remembers being sick was that time he threw up into the middle of the night.

After nap time, we went outside to enjoy the nice weather (in the shade -- still too hot in the sun!) We sat on blankets in the grass; Cayman drew in his notebook while Charis tried to grab his pen, or my camera, or my phone. It was so nice outside! But, apparently I've become a bug-aphobe, and when I saw ants crawling near Charis' feet/legs, I couldn't stand it, so we went inside. It was fun while it lasted, I suppose.
