We were so busy Sunday, that I have not even had a chance yet to load the pictures from our day onto our computer! (I will by the time I finish writing this post though.) I learned something Sunday during our busy day. My kids are not so little anymore! And I kind of like it! We were gone from the house ALL DAY. I didn't have to worry about naps. We hardly had to worry about diaper changes or potty breaks (Cayman can hold it longer than I can, I think.) It was such a nice, fun day...my kids are growing up! And it is quite enjoyable! Of course there are those rough growing pains that all families experience, especially when kids can't quite figure out how to communicate their feelings and instead choose to throw whatever is in their hands or lash out at whoever is closest. But there are good parts about growing up too! Like being able to be out all day long with no naps and no fussing!
We started off our day at the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kitty Hawk. My dad is a huge airplane/flight enthusiast and has always wanted to go there. I'm glad we got to take him. The guys all walked up to the memorial (high, HIGH, on a hill) while the girls walked through the museum.

We then drove a little further to Jockey's Ridge, after a quick stop for lunch. Unfortunately, by the time we got to Jockey's Ridge, the skies were looking very ominous! For those of you who have never heard of or been to Jockey's Ridge, it is a series of huge sand dunes. There's a boardwalk for observers, or you can choose to climb the sand dune. We really wanted to climb it, well some of us did, but unfortunately, after a few minutes at the observation deck, the rain started falling, and we barely made it back to the visitor's center before the bottom dropped out of the clouds! At least we all got a good chance to check out the visitor's center and learn about the formation of sand dunes and wildlife living around the dunes!
We had planned to just go straight to the beach after the sand dunes, but instead, we kept driving to check out one of the lighthouses. We made it to Bodie Island Lighthouse. Unfortunately it's closed for renovations so we couldn't climb to the top (I'm not sure we would have had the energy to do it anyways - we were probably all silently thankful it was closed!)

After snapping a few photos, we drove right across the road to a quiet public beach access. The storm had passed over and there were bright blue skies overhead. It would have been absolutely perfect except for the wind and FREEZING cold water! Ian and my dad attempted to fly a kite, but after countless crashes, the kite bit the dust one final time. I think my dad was thankful - he was getting pretty beat up by the kite! Of course Cayman and Charis enjoyed themselves in the sand. Charis still boo-hooed anytime she was taken near the water, but they both loved the sand!
We ended our day in the OBX at Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar -- YUMMY seafood! Despite being absolutely exhausted, Cayman and Charis were so well-behaved during dinner -- probably the best they've been in a restaurant in quite some time!
I know that I had a wonderful day introducing my parents to our new home. I am so glad that they took the time to come see us! I hope they had as much fun as we had. I also know two kiddos who definitely enjoyed having Grammy and Big Al here for the weekend.
I guess there's a slight chance we may be heading to Grammy and Big Al's house if Miss Irene decides to keep heading our way! Ian and I haven't really had a chance to discuss the what-ifs; I'm not sure if Charlotte or Raleigh will be a safe haven from the storm either - so I've thought about Augusta or Ian's grandparents in WV, if we're encouraged to evacuate. I guess we'll have to wait and see! We will be going to Wal-mart to stock up on batteries and flashlights though...
And in case you were wondering, yes, we did feel the tremors from the 6.0 earthquake that hit around 2PM, Tuesday, August 23 outside of Richmond, VA. I was sitting at the dining room table writing a card, the table started shaking like I had bumped it with my leg. But the movement lasted a little too long for a bump. Then I looked up and saw the light fixture moving overhead and Mungun's water moving back and forth in his bowl! That was a first for me! A hurricane will be a first as well!
