First Swim Lesson

I had such high hopes for Cayman's first swim lesson. I thought he would be a little nervous about it, mainly because he's still a little unsure around large pools. He loves the bathtub just fine! But he doesn't like water in his eyes, and he definitely does not like it when he can't touch the bottom (or thinks he can't touch the bottom.) Leading up to his first swim lesson, we talked about how he may need to be an encourager for others that may be a little nervous, or cheer for people as they jumped into the pool. We talked about being brave and courageous just like David from the Bible. So as he sat on the edge of the pool and wouldn't even stick his feet in the water like the other kids in his class to kick the water and splash and have fun, I knew we were in for trouble! When it was his turn to get in the water with the instructor and float around in the pool with him, Cayman just kind of melted down on the edge of the pool. Both instructors tried and tried to coax him into the water, but he refused. He was the only one that wouldn't get in the pool. (Well, there was one other little boy who wouldn't even sit with the class and ended up leaving early.) At the end, when I could tell class was over, I walked over to Cayman and tried to persuade him to get in. I tried ice cream, I tried candy, I tried a lollipop... Nothing worked. So I think he and I will go back tonight before his next lesson tomorrow afternoon, and get in the pool together so he can see there's nothing to be afraid of. At least I hope that's what happens!

Not gonna happen....
