Our local museum recently had an archaeologists all day long event. We went for about an hour to see what kind of activities they had. I'm so glad we went! Some of the things were for a much older group of kids. But they had a few ideas that were age appropriate for my little ones!
In this picture, they got to empty out all kinds of archaeological "finds" out of a brown paper bag and then use brushes to clean the "ancient" pieces. The museum had pieces of paper and rulers available so the kids could document and measure the rocks and pieces of pottery (and leaves, paper clips, shells, etc.)

In this picture, the kids were given chocolate chip cookies and they had to dig for fossils (chocolate chips) using their tools (toothpicks). Of course this was probably the only time in history that archaeologists got to eat their fossils!
