Here is a link to our first day of school last year in case you want to see the changes in the kiddos!
We had a great first day of school this year. Cayman started Kindergarten and Charis is in preschool. So far we have memorized Joshua 24:15 ("As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.") We have also focused on letter Aa. We created two "letter a" crafts for an alphabet book we'll create this year. I attempted to start a phonics/reading type book called "Explode the Code" with Cayman. After a short pretest on consonant sounds, the book jumped right into -at words. (ex: cat, mat, pat, etc...) Cayman wasn't quite ready for that yet, and after some advice from other moms and kindergarten teachers, we're going to wait a few weeks to revisit the book after reviewing letter sounds a little longer.
Which means...we get to play a lot more games during school time! I have spent a lot of time during the past few weeks creating "busy bag" games that I've found on pinterest and other websites. So far, the kids have loved almost all of them. One thing they have really enjoyed has been reading the library books we picked out on our first "field trip" to the library, calendar time, and journals (Cayman likes journaling more than Charis...) The toughest part during our first week of school has been keeping Charis entertained/busy while I'm trying to teach Cayman. While they do a lot of stuff together, there are still times when I need to just focus on Cayman. It just so happens that Charis needs me at that exact same moment! Right now, Callie naps while we do our school time in the morning. When she drops her morning nap, I may encounter a few more problems.... :)
Here are some pictures from our first days of school.

I love these mats! They're old posters that we used at Chick-fil-A! They're perfect, large dry-erase boards! |
Charis' facial expression cracked me up, too. The 2nd one of her "first day pics" is priceless. So cute. And, yes, they have changed slightly since last year!
